I seemed to have grown coils in my body, because no matter what position I got myself in, I would almost immediately bounce over to another. Toss and turn, turn and toss for hours. Or what seemed like hours. I was not paying much attention to the blinking alarm clock on my nightstand. However, I was acutely aware of every little sound coming from next door. The very thought that that thin wall was all that separated Oliver from me made me itchy and hot, as if assailed by some weird strain of chickenpox.

With a giant, loud sigh I flopped myself on my back, eyes wide open and staring at the bland ceiling above me. I couldn’t even remember the last time I had stayed awake because of a guy. Yet, here I was, my skin all tingling in frustration, all thoughts of sleep gone by the wayside. I listened—something I had done a million times already—for something, anything that would give me a clue as to how that man next door slept. Did he sleep on his side, a leg crossed over the other, one hand under the pillow? Or was he a back sleeper, mouth open and legs spread apart across the whole width of the bed? I knew he didn’t snore. My catlike ears would have caught even the slightest sign of that. But he did toss around a lot. I could hear the telltale subtle groaning of the wooden bed every time he turned. Either he was a restless sleeper or I was also rattling his sleep.

I couldn’t be sure how long I lay there, but eventually I must have drifted off to sleep. A muffled sound woke me up. My brain, blurred by sleep, took some time to process what I was hearing. Oliver! Propelled by one of those aforementioned springs, I jumped out of bed and ran next door, fueled by the sound of what I could identify now as screaming. The door to Oliver’s room was not locked and I barreled through it without much thought about privacy or decorum. The light of a small lamp infused the room in a soft, sleepy glow that allowed me to see inside. Oliver was sitting up in bed, an expression of utter horror in his wide-open eyes. A guttural scream left his lips as I entered, and for a second I thought I had scared him somehow.

“Oliver, what’s going on?” I approached the bed slowly at first, afraid of scaring him further, but I could tell I was not the reason for his distress. His blind eyes were focused on something ahead of him, something awful by the looks of him. He was having a hallucination. Now that I thought about it, I hadn’t seen him take any of the tea all day.

Running to his side, I sat on the edge of the bed and tried to hold him, but he swatted me away. With gusto. His arm slapped me across the chest and I lost my balance and fell on the floor.
